About Epoch Converter

Unix time (epoch time) is the number of seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. It is how most databases, APIs and log files store timestamps.

This converter turns an epoch timestamp into UTC, local and ISO 8601 dates, and converts a date string back into seconds and milliseconds. Values larger than 1e12 are treated as milliseconds, so both 1700000000 and 1700000000000 work.

How to use

  1. Enter an epoch timestamp and click Epoch → Date, or enter a date such as 2024-01-15T09:30:00Z and click Date → Epoch.
  2. Click Use Now to start from the current time.

FAQ

Seconds or milliseconds?

Unix tools and most backends use seconds (10 digits today), while JavaScript's Date.now() and Java's System.currentTimeMillis() return milliseconds (13 digits).

How do I get the current epoch time in code?

JavaScript: Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000). Python: int(time.time()). Bash: date +%s. Go: time.Now().Unix().

What is the Year 2038 problem?

Signed 32-bit integers can store epoch seconds only up to 2038-01-19 03:14:07 UTC. Systems that still use 32-bit time will overflow after that; 64-bit time avoids the problem.
